Haynes Family Creates Endowment in Memory of Lost Son

Matt Haynes was living, working and going to school in Tacoma, WA, when in 2000 he was killed in a car crash involving a drunk driver. He was only 18 years old.

When Matt died, his organs were donated to people across the United States, including a 60-year-old Seattle man who needed a new heart. Matt’s gift allowed that man to continue to live a healthy, active life.

The giving didn’t stop there. Eight years after Matt’s death, his parents, Jim and Cheryl Haynes, planned a golf tournament to raise money for the Benefis Healthcare Foundation’s Angel Fund and establish an endowment to keep their son’s memory alive through helping others.

The Matt Haynes Memorial Endowment to benefit the Angel Fund was created following the first golf tournament held in Matt’s memory on July 12, 2008. Benefis Healthcare Foundation’s Angel Fund provides financial assistance for northcentral Montana families who have a very sick child and must travel for medical treatment not available in Great Falls.

“We chose the Angel Fund to receive the proceeds from the golf tournaments because helping children was the right thing to do,” said Jim Haynes. “Matt would be so happy knowing that he is making a difference in so many young lives.”
