A Very Grateful Heart Patient
Foundation Board Member Dick Doughten
I shudder to think where I’d be today if it hadn’t been for Benefis.
“I still have a hard time believing that I had a heart attack at age 54, but I guess it could happen to anyone. We all want and deserve excellent medical care to be there when we need it and you just never know when that is going to happen,” states Dick.
Dick Doughten recalled not feeling well on December 29, 1997. He didn’t realize that he was suffering a heart attack—the first of four that he would endure. He was living in Chinook with his wife Nancy at the time and visiting his mother-in-law on her birthday at a nursing home. Throughout the day everyone who saw him kept saying “you don’t look so well”. Before long, Dick was admitted to the Havre hospital where they stabilized him and sent him to Benefis by Mercy Flight.
As a Benefis Healthcare Foundation Board Member, Dick knows firsthand that providing excellent care is very costly and that it takes the generosity of others to help ensure this care is there for families when it is needed. “Today at 65, I am in excellent health, which I thank Benefis for over and over again,” says Dick.
The fall of 2002 Dick and his wife Nancy moved to Great Falls for two main reasons. The first was to be near their daughter’s family and her beautiful children. The second reason was for the excellent health services offered in Great Falls and Dick’s desire to be close to those services if and when he’d need them again. “There is no better feeling knowing that Benefis is here for me.”
